Connecticut may not be the first place you think of when you think gambling, but any gambling enthusiast will tell you it’s a place that’s not to be overlooked. There may only be two casinos in Connecticut, but these two are all you need to fulfill your Connecticut gambling needs. The Connecticut casinos, Foxwoods and Mohegan Sun, are the two largest casinos in the world.
The two only casinos in Connecticut are in direct competition with each other. This is good for the visitors because they are constantly upgrading and adding to their facilities and improving what Connecticut gambling has to offer.
Foxwoods Resort and Casino, located in Ledyard, Connecticut, is currently the largest casino in the world, with over 340,000 square feet of gaming floor space. It contains over 7,000 slot machines and over 400 gaming tables with 17 different types of games including poker, blackjack, craps, roulette, and more. The resort contains 1,416 guest rooms, meeting halls, large convention rooms, and arcades for children, and a wide variety of restaurants to choose from. When you’re there, be sure to also check out the world’s largest Bingo hall.
In spring of 2008, Foxwoods plans to open their newest addition, the MGM Grand at Foxwoods. This new addition will add over 2 million square feet of space with 125 new game tables, 1,500 slot machines, 824 hotel rooms, 4 restaurants, 4 retail outlets, and a 4,000 seating capacity performance theater. With everything from concerts to performances and shows, there surely will be something to spike your interest.
Don’t spend all your time at Foxwoods though. Mohegan Sun has something to offer to Connecticut gambling as well. Located along the Thames River, it is at the center of the beautiful foothills of southeaster Connecticut. With 300,000 square feet of gaming space, the casino contains 6,200 slot machines and 300 gaming tables. They even have the popular French card game, Baccarat. Besides gambling and games, the Mohegan Sun is home of the world’s largest planetarium, displaying the sun, moon, and constellations. This is located right above the Wombi Rock, which is a three-story tall crystal mountain. Another famous sight is the Taughannick Falls, a giant 55 foot indoor waterfall that splashes onto a massive crystalline boulder.
The Mohegan Sun Arena, located inside the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino, is the home of Connecticut’s only major league sports team, the WNBA team, Connecticut Sun. The arena seats 9,518 people and when not in use for basketball, hosts a variety of events such as dog shows, performances, and concerts.
For the poker enthusiast, these Connecticut casinos host weekly poker tournaments and World Poker Tour events with several different poker games such as no limit and limit Texas Hold’em, seven-card stud, and Omaha High/Low. If tournament poker isn’t your thing, Foxwoods offers one of the largest cash poker rooms in the world with 114 tables.
The casinos in Connecticut and all Connecticut gambling are regulated by the Connecticut Gaming Policy Board.
The Connecticut casinos are generally the busiest in July and August. If you plan on visiting in these months, make sure to book your reservations early before they all fill up. With plenty of entertainment venues, a variety of restaurants, and shops, the Connecticut casinos are surely worth a visit by yourself, or with your family.
